No, we aren’t talking about the boogie man or the swamp monster, we are talking about yeast. Today you will get to do TWO activities with yeast: a cooking and a science activity! But before we get started, you need to learn a little about yeast.
How bread is made– Primary (K-2)
The Grain Chain: Yeast & Gluten– Intermediate (3-5)
Yeast under a microscope– Primary & Intermediate (so neat!)
Experiment Time!
Like I mentioned, today we are doing TWO activities! You’ve had a chance to learn about and take a close-up look at yeast. Now it’s time to use it. First we are going to do an experiment with it, and second we will do a simply cooking baking recipe with it!
Materials for Science: about 2tsp of yeast, water, spoonful of sugar, 3 ziplock bags
Materials for Baking: 1 3/4 cup flour, 1 1/4 tsp yeast, warm water, bowl, mixing spoon, baking sheet, PAM, kosher salt

If your kids enjoyed this science/cooking combo activity, they’d love our The Kitchen Chemist with Club SciKidz camp (ages 6-8). The camp is offered through Howard County Rec & Parks and is held the week of July 20th and August 17th. The course # is: RP1824. Click here to register.
Philly Pretzel Factory (Primary & Intermediate)
Now that you’ve made your own pretzels, take a tour of the pretzel factory and see how they make them.

Thank You so much!!! We have been following along daily since last Monday. This is my kids favorite part of the day so it is how I start off the “school day” I have also been incorporating writing and art or math when applicable. This is really making my life easier right now, I can’t thank you enough! <3

You are very welcome! We are happy to be able to help! And as a reading teacher for many years, a great resource I found for integrating different skills into reading is Scholastic’s Learn at Home site. It offers daily modules for different age groups. Any other questions, just let us know!

Thank you very much for these daily experiments. We started last week and it’s my kids favorite part of the day now that we are “home schooling.” We all enjoy this time together and are learning and having fun.
